RESUMEN
Ferrites are a large class of oxides materials with remarkable magnetic, electrical and catalytical properties with high chemical and thermal stabilities, which have been investigated and applied during the last ∼ 50 years. These materials are technologically important and their applications encompass an impressive range extending from millimeter wave integrated circuitry to power handling, simple permanent magnets, magnetic recording, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) enhancement, catalysis, magnetically guided drug delivery, sensors and pigments. These applications are based upon the very basic properties of ferrites: a significant saturation magnetization, a high electrical resistivity, low electrical losses, a very good chemical stability and the presence of transition metal atoms which are available as catalytic reaction sites. In recent years the possibility of preparing ferrites in the form of nanoparticles has open a new and exciting research field. Their properties are size and shape dependent and known to be sensitive to the processing techniques. Ferrite nanomaterials are obtained mainly by wet-chemical sol-gel or co-precipitation methods, more rarely by the sonochemical technique, mechanical high-energy ball milling, spark plasma sintering, microwave heating or hydrothermal route. The presentation will focus on different synthetic techniques and their influence on particle properties. Furthermore, insight into selected applications of ferrite nanoparticles will be given
